'Frauen' here only

Really Germany? Really?

These are not family spaces. There are other family spaces next to those. These are parking spaces for women! In a world, where women are supposed to be equal someone forgot to tell the Germans! These spaces are everywhere in shopping centres, city centre car parks, etc. These spaces are not particularly larger like family spaces. They are sometimes closer to the entrance as disabled spaces would be but that is it.

Why? Oh, why?
Because women can't park? Because they need special spaces? I can park in normal spaces (most of the time), thanks very much.

  1. They tend to be particularly well-lit or close to exits etc. They are meant to contribute to safety (safe from harassment etc). I think that was the idea behind designated parking spaces for women in multi-storey car parks.

  2. Why didn't I think of that? Makes a lot of sense. I still find it a bit patronising though.
I have also seen them in non multi storey car parks.... Maybe places where there have been incidents ...

    1. I have never seen these "Frauen only". For some women, these parking spots are "safe haven". But I don't think it's a solution to the core problem. Harrasement and other delictual/criminal acts have to be managed on another level than just "safe spots". Because everyone could be potentialy in danger and if we start having these thoughts, we will lock us down and see any other person as a threat. ... Oh, yeah, sorry. We already do that in many "developed countries"... When you exude fear and no self-esteem, you attract those who delight in it. It's difficult to change the mentalities, but it's worth it. I hope they will think about safety for all and not just tucking in a corner with soft blankets a part of the equation (women).

  3. The only reason is to make women feel more safe. As toontopo said, they are well-lit, close to exits and often supervised by cameras in order to guarantee women more safety from harassment etc. You can find these places everywhere, not only in multi-storey car parks. And you'll find them in Switzerland too. See more about this on: http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frauenparkplatz.

    1. It feels so un-German though. I have never seen any of those in other European countries... Anyboody? Apparently Switzerland is removing them.
