5 Portuguese foods to try as a family
7 Dec 2015
Portuguese food is usually quite hearty and filling and not always the most appealing at first glance. Portions are huge and there are rarely special kids' menus in restaurants (which is actually probably a good thing). When travelling with children, finding things they will like can be a challenge, especially when the ingredients are unknown to them and to you, as parents. So, here are some suggestions as to what you can get them to try (tested and approved by my 1- and 5-year-old).
When I was invited to review one of Sasha's Global Table Adventure recipes, I didn't hesitate for one second. I love the idea of cooking a meal from a different country and the recipes I have tried so far were delicious. (I highly recommend the Mauritian Chilli Poppers or the Alfajores amongst many other things).

It is an odd day today. We will be watching a game where we will be rooting for a team while most of the other people around us will be rooting for the opposite team (literally). As we live in Germany, I guess our cheers will be quiet against the huge backdrop of German cheers in the city.
As Portugal plays its first match against Germany today, we celebrate by munching on these little breads while watching the game. These are family favourites and great comfort food.
Post aus meiner Küche: childhood memories
29 Mar 2013
The regular readers may remember when I wrote about a food exchange I took part in in December. The lovely ladies from Post aus meiner Küche organise 3 or 4 times a year a food packet exchange. It is a German affair although neighbouring countries are now taking part too.
The premise for this exchange is the following: a theme is set and you are assigned a partner. You must send that person a parcel containing up to 5 delicious items you have cooked. This time round the theme is childhood memories, “Kindheitserinnerungen”.

We are a real foodie family. Cooking (and eating) are a big part of our family life. Through food, our daughter gets to discover her heritage. Our favourite family dinner at the moment is a typical portuguese dish called caldeirada. As most of portuguese cooking, caldeirada is a very honest dish: it comes from the boats, docks and homes of the people whose survival depended (or even still depends) upon the sea.
