A typical interaction between my daughter and her father these days.
LJ: de l'eau. (water- French)Papa: queres de l'eau ? (do you want -Portuguese - some water - French)LJ: ja! (yes in German)
She is 19 months old in a couple of days. If you are new to my blog, you should know that I speak French to her, hubby speaks Portuguese and our family language is English. We live in Germany.
My husband is not very good at sticking to his language he often switches to French as most of what she says is in French. I try and make him say things more often in Portuguese but he 'forgets'. How is she going to learn the word agua (Portuguese for water) if he never says it to her?!
Have you got any tips? What works for you?
I don't want to be nagging him all the time, but I think I am going to have to!!!
I don't know! My husband doesn't speak enough English in our house, not his native language though so that's to be expected I guess. I will be stalking this post looking for some tips!
ReplyDeleteIt took my husband a while to get in the habit of speaking Russian only to our son (our family language is English). It helps now my son talks back to him in Russian, but mainly he just had to make a real effort.
ReplyDeleteYou coud try a 'swear box'. Every time he says something to your daughter not in Portuguese he puts X amount in the box. You use the box to buy pretty things. ;-)
You can take the teacher out of the classroom...
