Hand gestures in cross-cultural communication (MKB vlogging: travel with kids)

17 Feb 2014

As part of a very fun little vlogging (video blogging) experiment with some fellow MKB bloggers, I made this little video answering a question I was asked about travelling with kids.

I was asked a question by Bronwyn from Journeys of the Fabulist about hand gestures. Here is my response (in a video):

Apologies about the big fat pregnant version of me ;-)

Check out these other rude gestures around the world.

Olga at the European Mama will be answering my question. Check it out here.

  1. Nice discussion, and definitely very true! I'm glad you haven't been caught out using any misplaced gestures on your travels. Words can definitely be more accurate (although I'm sure some people have run into awkward situations there, too!) Also great to see your blog up already - I've just put mine up and was able to link to it straight away.

  2. Love your video. The best part of this for me is getting to see and hear everyone. It's like finally meeting a friend you've talked to for ages!

  3. Oh my, these are getting more and more professional as I move along the list! Soon I am going to have to start giving out Oscars! Anabelle you are definitely shortlisted if not a winner! There is no end to your talents and I love that you included a link to gestures. I am going to bookmark it to check next time I travel since I may be prone to them (along with the discovery of my Euh, likes and you knows!).

  4. I also heard about victory sign having different meanings in different countries. Great answer, Annabelle! And I love 3D globe!

  5. I so want to learn more about all these rude hand gestures ... I learned alot. I am worried now about all the horrible gestures I may have used in other countries - ha! - I thought I was relatively culturally aware but, alas, I had no idea.

  6. Great video! You are very wise to avoid using hand gestures when traveling - better safe than sorry! And I agree with Amanda - it is such a treat to finally see you in person! You are just radiant and have such a lovely voice :)
